Here is a brief update on our campus ministry efforts at West Virginia University. The Lord has blessed us richly.
We have the challenge of needing to grow our group every year. The nature of campus ministry causes us to lose student every year, some due to graduation and others choosing a different kind of church or ministry. Our work brings us into constant contact with new students from multiple states and countries. It’s a great blessing to discuss the Lord Jesus with such a diverse group of people.
Our leadership group is strong. Our female workers demonstrate a tremendous amount of initiative and maturity that we need to build on in the coming months. We have several mature guys with sincere, servant hearts. Please pray for the development of more male leaders!
The temptations of life at WVU are enormous. I am so proud of any young person who devotes him/herself to Jesus and seeks to avoid the path of worldly behavior.
The strength of evil seems overwhelming. Edmund Burke said, “All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.” Evil will continue to dominate our society if we as the Lord’s church merely huddle together and batten down the hatches. As Christian leaders working on the front lines, it is crucial that we engage the hurting and dying world around us. The apostle Paul wrote, “For our battle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces in the heavenly realms” (Eph 6:12). Our struggle is to rescue people from evil - our true enemy - and I am grateful that we have the freedom here to do just that.
If you are at another church, I encourage you to take these dangers seriously and to speak bluntly with your young people about the need to be connected to Jesus. This involves more than just coming to church with one’s parents. Spiritual formation is a lifelong process that is a non-negotiable part of being a Christian. James wrote, “For faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead” (Jas 2:17). Faith is not some intellectual assent to a truth. Faith is about living one’s life with radical dependence on God and Him alone. Are you teaching this kind of faith in your church? Are young people learning how to act out a living faith? Please pray for us as we strive to promote faith on this major college campus.
West Virginia University Mountaineers For Christ is a ministry of the Morgantown church of Christ on the West Virginia University campus. Students from the entire mid-Atlantic region come from a variety of churches. Through MOUNTAINEERS FOR CHRIST, the Morgantown church serves as a training ground for these young men and women. There is also a great opportunity for evangelism among the nearly 30,000 students enrolled at WVU.
Our campus ministry is one of the oldest and strongest in the entire mid-Atlantic region. The ministry began in the late 1960s when several Christian students banded together to form CHI, an officially recognized student organization. The student group has its own facility on the Evansdale campus.
The student leadership and campus minister plan numerous activities throughout the year to provide opportunities for developing deep and meaningful relationships with other students and with Jesus Christ.
There are many activities on campus, most often in the Christian Student Center located at 2923 University Avenue on the corner of University Avenue and Oakland Street. For more information on meeting times, worship, retreats and other upcoming events, please call
